FlowDown Directional Portable AC Window-Panel Adapter
FlowDown is a directional portable-AC window-panel adapter created specifically for casement and awning windows where a straight-out exhaust path can be restricted by the open sash.
The complete FlowDown kit includes the adapter and directional scoop. Installed low in a bottom corner of the panel, the scoop redirects hot exhaust approximately 45° downward to help the air clear the window opening instead of striking the sash or glass.
Why FlowDown was created
FlowDown addresses two common problems with portable ACs installed in casement and awning windows.
1. Hot exhaust can be redirected back toward the panel
If the window cannot open far enough to give the exhaust a clear path, a standard straight-out adapter can send hot air directly into the open sash or glass. The hot air can then be deflected back toward the window panel instead of escaping cleanly outside.
This can restrict exhaust airflow, reduce cooling performance and increase heat around the panel, window frame and mounting system. Excessive heat can also soften or reduce the holding strength of adhesive-backed mounting products such as hook-and-loop.
FlowDown changes the exhaust direction so the hot air is aimed downward and toward the open area of the window, helping provide a clearer exhaust path in limited-clearance installations.
2. The window can be accidentally closed while the AC is installed
A casement or awning window can sometimes be partially or fully closed by mistake while the panel and portable AC are still in place — for example by another person in the home or an exterior window cleaner.
Because the FlowDown scoop projects outward from the panel, the sash will normally encounter the adapter before it can fully close in many common installations. This helps reduce the chance of the exhaust opening being accidentally blocked while the AC is operating.
Important: FlowDown is not a window lock or safety device. Window designs vary, so always confirm that the exhaust path is open and unobstructed before operating the portable AC.

Best suited for
- Casement windows — helps move exhaust away from an outward-opening sash.
- Awning windows — directs hot exhaust below and away from the open sash.
- Windows with limited opening clearance — useful where a conventional straight-out exhaust outlet sits too close to the window.
- 5.9 in hose systems — threaded connection for common 5.9 in portable-AC exhaust hose.
- Compatible 6.3 in hose systems — accommodates compatible 6.3 in hose connections through the integrated receiving ring.
Recommended placement
For casement and awning window panels, FlowDown is generally most effective when installed low and toward a bottom corner of the panel, with the scoop aimed into the open portion of the window.
The exact position depends on the window geometry, sash location, hose routing and available clearance.
Key features
- Directional scoop included — redirects hot exhaust approximately 45° downward.
- Helps improve exhaust clearance — especially where an open sash sits close to the panel outlet.
- Helps discourage accidental sash closing — the projecting scoop can physically interfere with the closing sash in many common installations.
- Secure three-point twist-lock mounting — three keyed locking points engage the matching panel cutout as the adapter is twisted into place, holding it firmly against the panel without permanent fastening.
- Easy to remove and reinstall — twist to unlock and remove the adapter, then align it with the keyed opening and twist it back into its secure locked position when needed.
- Integrated metal mesh bug screen — helps reduce insects and debris entering through the exhaust opening when the hose is removed.
- Built for custom panels — designed around 5/32 in panel material.
FlowDown or FlowOut?
Choose FlowDown for casement and awning windows where exhaust needs to be directed away from an open sash.
Choose FlowOut for sliding windows and sliding doors where the exhaust can travel straight through the panel. FlowOut supports 5 in and 5.9 in hose sizes.
What’s included
- 1 × FlowDown adapter body
- 1 × FlowDown directional scoop
- Integrated metal mesh bug screen
Material
Adapter body and directional scoop: PVC.
Bug screen: metal mesh.
Secure, removable panel connection
FlowDown uses a purpose-made three-point keyed twist-lock connection. The three locking points align with the matching panel cutout and engage as the adapter is twisted into place, creating a firm mechanical connection to the panel.
Once locked, the adapter stays securely connected without screws, bolts or permanent fastening through the panel. When the adapter needs to be removed for storage, cleaning or seasonal use, simply twist it back to the release position and lift it out. Reinstallation is just as simple: align the keyed connection and twist it back into place.
Panel material compatibility
Designed for 5/32 in (approximately 4 mm) panel material. The twist-lock connection works well with accurately cut acrylic, PVC sheet, corrugated plastic, cardboard and suitable wood sheet products, provided the material is rigid enough to securely support the adapter and the matching cutout is reproduced accurately.
If adhesive hook-and-loop is being used to mount the finished panel, adhesion is best on clean, smooth PVC or metal surfaces. Adhesive hook-and-loop is not recommended on raw wood, painted wood, dusty, porous or deteriorated surfaces.
Hose compatibility
The standard FlowDown connection is threaded for common 5.9 in portable-AC exhaust hose.
For compatible 6.3 in hose systems, the adapter includes an integrated receiving ring designed to accept the compatible hose collar or connection.
Optional accessory
FlowDown Cover Plate — closes the panel opening when the exhaust hose and adapter are not in use.
Panel cutout
FlowDown uses its matching three-point twist-lock panel cutout. The same cutout can be used in compatible 5/32 in acrylic, corrugated plastic and other suitable panel materials.
Important: FlowDown is intended for custom portable-AC window panels using its matching cutout. It is not intended as a universal replacement for every factory portable-AC window kit.
Technical product information
Product specifications
FlowDown combines a secure three-point keyed twist-lock panel connection with approximately 45° downward exhaust direction for casement and awning windows. The three locking points engage the matching cutout as the adapter is twisted into place, holding it firmly to the panel while still allowing fast twist-off removal and reinstallation when needed.
